Devan Mackenzie Doherty was born at Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina, while her father was completing his medical fellowship—an early beginning that shaped her connection to medicine and patient care.

 

Devan is a Level II Certified Addiction Counselor (CACII) and joined Athens Behavioral Medicine on April 1 as both a counselor and the Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) Program Coordinator. In this role, she plays an integral part in the development and coordination of MAT services, with a focus on delivering care that is not only evidence-based, but also individualized for those experiencing substance use disorders.

 

Prior to joining Athens Behavioral Medicine, Devan spent 14 years working alongside her dad and mentor, Dr. Dennis C. Doherty. This experience shaped her clinical foundation and reinforced her commitment to providing stigma-free, patient-centered care grounded in dignity, respect, and accountability.

 

She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, with a concentration in Public Relations, from the University of Georgia in 2011, along with a minor in Sociology. Her background, combined with over a decade of experience in healthcare, informs her approach to patient engagement, communication, and advocacy.

 

Devan’s clinical interests include substance use disorders, co-occurring mental health conditions, stigma reduction, and expanding access to treatment. She is also involved in professional education and community outreach, with a focus on integrating medication-assisted treatment and behavioral health services.

 

In her spare time, Devan enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, and channeling her creativity into hosting thoughtfully themed gatherings—from baby and bridal showers to other meaningful celebrations—where every detail is intentional and memorable.
